SUMMARY: v6.1 Firmware upgrade on 3000/400's

Hi All,

Thought I'd post a summary since I've been seeing a lot of traffic on the
subject. The first heads up on this problem was actaully awhile back
(July 13) in a "SUMMARY: osf upgrade" post to this list by Dave Santana.
It contained the following reply from Joanna Siegel:

Hi,

A word of warning....be careful when you do the firmware upgrade. There
is an errata sheet sent with the firmware upgrade that warns about doing
upgrades on a 3000/400. If you don't have the proper SROM version you
will toast your machine and have to call field service. A way to check
is to do show config at the console level:

>>> show config

CPU OK KN15-AA-V6.1-S45E-I077-sV2.1-DECchip 21064 P3.0
                                        ^^^^
SROM: if you have anything below
                                              V2.1 you should upgrade the
                                              SROM before upgrading the
                                              firmware V6.1.

Field service will have to get you the proper SROM version.

Joanna

A couple of additional notes on the problem:

1) It is only for 3000/400's

2) The errata sheet doesn't seem to be included in Digital Unix 3.2 kits,
   only with V3.2B kits.

3) BEFORE you have the SROM chip replaced, you need to get your firmware
up to v3.0 (our DEC technician informed me of this - apparently it's
in their service instructions). Otherwise you'll still end up with
a non-bootable board. (You can check your firmware rev level on that
same "show config" line that Joanna mentions - it's the third group -
   V6.1 in her example).

4) The SROM chip is the only socketed chip on the motherboard and the
   v2.1 chip is labeled:
                            333E7/9422
                            (C)DEC94
