VAXstation 4000/90 notes

PrevUp

This is the first VAXstation I acquired, along with my first DECstation. It was part of an industrial control system, too. I took my first lessons in VMS installation on this box, and fell flat on my face due to the crappy TCP/IP implementation (MIN_INTSTKPAGES). More annoyances arise from the hobbyist PAKs to be renewed annually and the anachronistic PAK scheme in general.
Just as the VAXstation 3176, the VS4000 can't run ULTRIX, and I'm not sure about the status of *BSD ports.

Change controller's SCSI ID

At the console
set scsi 7

Console BFLG issues

Some BFLG settings cause installations to fail after transfer of first saveset from CD to disk. At console level (>>>):
show bflg ! sometimes gives 70000001, causes failure
set bflg 0 ! that's better

Bootable CD-ROM

Does not boot from external Toshiba XM-3701B CD-ROM, but a Plextor PX-32TSi will work. The "blocking" jumper must be disabled.

Maxtor HDs

Maxtor MXT-540S disks (extracted from ancient IBM RS/6000 25Ts) with VMS system clones weren't bootable.

ULTRIX support

This machine doesn't run ULTRIX
