Nuclear Overlap Calculation
A high energy collision between two
nuclei can be considered as a collision between two groups of nucleons.
The number of nucleon-nucleon collisions and the number of participating
nucleons can be calculated for a given impact parameter using the formalism
written down by Kari Eskola in Nucl. Phys. B 323(1989)37.
I wrote a simple program to perform these calculations numerically.
This approach, by the way, is also known under the names of 'wounded nucleon model'
and 'Glauber model' and was, as pointed out by Glauber in his talk in the Quark
Matter 2005 conference in Budapest, introduced by Bialas, Bleszynski, and Czyz,
Nucl. Phys. B111(1976)461.
