High Availability for Network File System (HANFS), a separately ordered feature, provides enhanced availability for data accessed via the Network File System (NFS). A POWERstation/POWERserver running AIX and HANFS can survive certain types of planned as well as hardware and software outages that might make customer data unavailable.
HANFS supports the NFS protocol. NFS is a distributed file system that allows users to access files and directories located on remote computers and treats the files and directories as if they were available locally. HANFS requires it's server to be in pairs; therefore, a HANFS server hardware configuration requires two RISC/6000 deskside units.
The AIX Network File System Encryption Feature/6000 is an optional feature of AIX/6000 Version 3 (See IBM Programming Announcement ZP90-0104, dated February 15, 1990.) AIX Network File System Encryption Feature/6000 allows the remote access of network files. User authentication for NFS is provided via secure Remote Procedure Call's (RPC) use of functions using the Data Encryption Standard (DES). This authentication provides an increased level of network security over that provided by UNIX authentication.
The AIX Network File System Encryption Feature/6000 is a separately ordered feature that provides a general purpose encryption capability, implements the Data Encryption Standard, and is subject to export restrictions. The initial announcement restricted the DES feature to US availability only. This announcement updates the export restrictions to align with the export regulations.
The AIX Network File System Encryption Feature/6000 feature includes full function DES algorithm, and as such is subject to U.S. Government export/rexport laws and regulations concerning "full" DES products. For specific information on licensing categories and procedures governing the export and delivery of full DES products overseas, please contact your IBM Marketing Representative.
AIX/6000 Version 3.2 contains a wide array of new functions and improved performance and usability enhancements. It has improved system and networking performance by reducing LAN device driver path lengths, increasing efficiency of UNIX sockets throughput, improving C compile and link time, and tuning selected kernel functions and Network File System (NFS), and TCP/IP network services.
AIX/6000 Version 3.2 virtual memory mapping interface, mmap, allows application programs to map files and share memory regions. Files can be accessed as arrays in virtual memory allowing simplified file access code in large object-oriented application programs.
The Async I/O Extension facility provides an asynchronous I/O system call processing capability enabling improved system performance throughput in application environments such as servers that must handle requests from multiple clients concurrently. AIX kernel system calls are now able to initiate successive I/O requests prior to each I/O request completion which allows the calling process to continue without blocking.
AIX/6000 Version 3.2 includes streams support compatible with UNIX System V Release 4, which provides defined standard interfaces for character input/output devices within the AIX kernel and its system services. (However, the portable streams do not include providing stream-based drivers). It provides the environment to port stream-based I/O devices.
Installation of this selective kernel extension will improve development and performance of the AIX network communication services by providing a flexible and more portable set of facilities and development tools.
In addition to providing streams environments, UNIX System V Release 3 Transport Interface, which runs over TCP/IP protocol, is provided. Networked applications which are written using TLI can be ported to AIX/6000 Version 3.2. This facility is in addition to, not instead of, Sockets System calls already in AIX/6000 Version 3.2.
AIX/6000 Version 3.2 includes Xerox Network Systems (XNS) protocol, Levels 1 and 2. This facilitates porting and designing integrated office systems which can be built on the XNS network. Included also is the feature of an encapsulation over IP.
The XL C Compiler 1.2 is part of AIX/6000 Version 3.2 and produces optimized object code which exploits the RISC System/6000 hardware. It is upward compatible (ie. both source and object) with XL C Compiler 1.1.
The XL C Compiler 1.2 conforms to the following standards:
The following commands have been enhanced to comply with X/Open Portability Guide Issue 3 (XPG3):
To aid in IBM's ongoing effort of providing required network management facilities, the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Agent facilities, a part of AIX/6000 Version 3.2, have the following new features:
This new channel connectivity is a separately ordered feature of AIX/6000 Version 3.2 which allows the RISC System/6000 processor to communicate to a S/370 or S/390 host using the parallel channel protocol support in block multiplexer mode. TCP/IP is supported and the IBM TCP/IP Version 2.2 for VM (5753-FAL) licensed program is required at the host. This new enhancement allows the POWERstation/POWERserver to be used as a gateway between the VM host and the downstream networks that consist of LAN or WAN. Therefore, distributed systems can access the VM resource, NFS and the TCP/IP applications resident at the host. A selected updates is required and will be shipped automaticly to all users, who have subscribed to PTF updates.
The Block Multiplexor Channel software feature is required

The RISC System/6000 Serial Optical Channel Converter provides two ports on each Serial Optical Channel Converter. Each Port can make an optical link with another RISC System/6000 machine or with an external IBM Business Partner router (Data Exchange products from Network System Corporation).
The SOCC provides unique data paths to the system memory separate from the Micro Channel(TM) interface, where applications can utilize high bandwidth and dedicated communications.
The hardware protocol features include error detection capability and the ability to dynamically pace the arrival rate of frames to maximize the aggregate bandwidth of all links.
The SOCC supports the TCP/IP through standard AIX and UNIX interfaces. Additionally, there is an AIX programming interface for applications that directly utilize the SOCC.
It is supported by RISC System/6000 POWERstations/POWERservers 520, 520H, 530, 530H, 540, 550, 560, 930, 950E and 950. Two converters are supported by RISC System/6000 POWERservers 930, 950E and 950, which provide four optical connections.

All ISO 8859/x Code Sets are included in AIX/6000 Version 3.2 and is available April, 1992. Only the specific languages listed below are fully supported. The IBM Code Sets are supported to allow users to migrate to the standard code sets. AIX/6000 Version 3.2 shall be able to concurrently handle on a per process basis any one of the following:
This is the capability of a program product to recognize and process characters contained in the AIX/6000 Version 3.2 IBM Code Set 850 or ISO 8859 for Single Byte Character Set (SBCS), or Shifted-Japanese Industrial Standard (S-JIS) IBM Code Set 932 for Japanese Kanji Double Byte Character Set (DBCS), or EUC which is represented as a Multiple Byte Character Set (MBCS). There is a hierarchical relationship among MBCS, DBCS, and SBCS; that is, programs that support MBCS also support DBCS, and programs that support DBCS also support SBCS.
The AIX library functions that perform character handling (collation, classification, conversion) are modified to handle the different ASCII based code set encoding schemes in a manner that is transparent to the utilities and applications that make use of the library functions.
It is necessary for utilities and applications that manipulate characters to use the enhanced library functions to achieve the full code set and encoding scheme independence. However, utilities and applications that perform direct manipulation of characters (without the aid of the enhanced library functions) will still work. The utilities and applications that perform direct manipulation of characters are limited to the code sets and encoding schemes for which they have been programmed.
The natively attached keyboards previously announced as supported by AIX are supported. The following keyboards are added to this release:
Multiple Latin 1 language keyboard tables are provided:
Character handling tables (collation, classification, conversion) for all new valid language and code set combinations are provided in addition to the previous IBM Code Set character handling tables. New tables are included for:

The print subsystem ensures that the data to be printed is properly represented on the printed page within the capabilities of the specific printer. This may require a translation of the printable data into the code set of the printer. AIX/6000 Version 3.2 supports the IBM 4019 printer with the Japanese (Kanji), when Japanese locale is installed on AIX.
In order to provide code set independence to applications and utilities that utilize terminfo and termcap, these data bases are changed to cause the line drawing characters and other special symbols to be obtained from the special symbols code set. The line drawing characters and other special symbols present on the IBM Code Set are not available on the ISO Code Sets.
AIX provides for the attachment and handling of terminals with a diverse set of code set and language capabilities. In addition to the support of ASCII terminals, support is provided for terminals that support languages other than English. Attachment of terminals via data stream translation is provided to permit a terminal that produces one data stream (code set) to be used to communicate with an application that processes a different code set.
Base Operating System Installation provides "locales" for all the supported languages, which includes defaults for:
The RISC System/6000 System Software is available with Program Integrated Information translated into several languages. The amount of translation varies by Licensed Program Product and language. The XL C Compiler Version 1.2 implementation for AIX systems complies with the SAA C level 2 definition, with some exceptions. (The exceptions are specified in the AIX XL C/6000 Language Reference AIX/6000 Version 3.2, (SC09-1260)).
The Network File System support provided in the AIX/6000 Version 3.2 is compatible with other systems that support ONC/NFS(TM) versions 3.X or 4.X.
(TM) ONC/NFS is a trademark of Sun Microsytems, Inc.
The goal of AIX Version 3.2 is to be binary compatable with previous versions. Any application which was written to conform to the published system functions available in AIX Version 3.1 should run without change on an AIX Version 3.2 system. Where there are differences, AIX 3.2 has provided functions to allow the AIX Version 3.1 application to function normally in the AIX Version 3.2 environment, e.g. Symbolic links in the new file tree, X11.3, and Motif 1.0 libraries.
The most common failure which occured during testing of AIX Version 3.2 was caused by the new malloc. Malloc was changed for AIX Version 3.2 to be more space efficient. Using the new malloc, some applications may fail due to application problems that were not discovered using the AIX Version 3.1 malloc. To work around this problem, it is possible in AIX Version 3.2 to request the AIX Version 3.1 malloc behavior by setting the environment variable MALLOCTYPE=3.1. If the application behaves normally then the problem is in the application.
In the event that an application does not run under AIX Version 3.2, and the application owner cannot resolve the problem additional documentation will be available thru your normal support channel.
AIX/6000 Version 3.2 does not provide support for other than ASCII (7-Bit) character usage in variable names.
There are some networking and mail limitations in NLS on the use of non-ASCII characters in system names, user names, file names, directory names, commands and subroutines.
The InfoExplorer License Extension feature of AIX/6000 Version 3.2 must be ordered separately for each system that supports users of AIX InfoCrafter/6000 (5696-108) who author their own documentation and display via the InfoExplorer information retrieval software or each system that supports users who choose to display a non-IBM library. Select the chargeable software feature and the quantity of software features corresponding to the number of systems to be supported.
The following AIX/6000 Version 3.2 facilities do not provide Japanese language character support:
See AIX/6000 Version 3.2 reference material for a list of commands and subroutines that support national languages.
The following AIX/6000 Version 3.2 facilities do not provide National Language Support:
The performance of the DOS Server function is affected by the network transfer rate and the size and efficiency of the data transfer specific to the DOS or AIX application program.
