AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000 Base Support
includes the following functional enhancements:
AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000
includes the following functional enhancements:
- M-Audio Capture and Playback Adapter (M-ACPA) Enhancements
- Source mix allows a previously recorded data file to be played
simultaneously with a "live" track (microphone or line in).
This provides a way to present a live presentation with a music
background. It provides a level of audio function more
compatible with the IBM OS/2(R).
- A sample X client (shipped as source) will be provided that
demonstrates the ability to
record and playback audio.
(R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines
Corporation
- Improved Disk Mirroring Capability
- AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000 allows the user to turn off Logical Volume Manager (LVM)
quorum protection. Quorum
protection is designed to ensure data consistency and integrity. When
activating a logical volume group, the LVM reads
management data from each physical volume defined in the volume group. If
the LVM cannot read a majority (quorum) of the copies
of the management data, it will not activate a logical volume group.
However, if there are only two physical volumes in a volume group, losing
one physical volume can cause the volume group to lose a majority of its
management data areas (quorum) and thus prevent the volume group from
being made available. Turning off quorum protection allows a volume group
to be available even when a quorum of its disks are not online. This
would make, for instance, the alternate copy of data in a mirrored
logical volume in a two-disk volume group accessible. While this is a
less expensive availability option, it is not as secure as running with
LVM quorum on (which may require three disks to help guarantee no loss of
data and no off-line time). Users run the risk of data loss with quorum
protection turned off, since the data may be accessible but not mirrored.
- Terminal-Attached Printers Support
- This function allows a user to attach a printer to
the auxillary port of an ASCII
terminal and to configure a print queue
for that printer. Print jobs can
then be submitted to the printer using the
standard AIX print commands.
- National Language Support
- AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000 provides national language support enhancements to the
previously announced capabilities. The enhancements are the addition
of national language support for:
- Extended UNIX Code (EUC) for Korean
- Extended UNIX Code (EUC) for Traditional Chinese
This support includes code set support, national language encoding and
handling, natively attached keyboards
and character handling tables (collation, classification and
conversion). These languages are in addition to the currently
supported list of language/territory locales.
In addition, native keyboard attach support is being added with
AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000 for:
- Netherlands (ID 143)
Note: Only ISO 8859-1 code set supported.
- Turkish (ID 440)
- PCF Fonts for Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese Printer Support
- Printer backend support that uses
Xwindows(3)
fonts for printing Japanese, Korean
and Taiwanese files is updated to
handle the new PCF font format used by
X Window System(4)
Version 11.5 that is incorporated into
AIXwindows Environment/6000 Version 1.2.3.
(Refer to Programming Announcement ZP92-0667
dated October 20, 1992)
- Japanese Input Method (JIM):
- This enhancement provides the ability to use multiple system
dictionaries whose format is compatible with the one in the IBM
Operating System/2. Users

- XL C Compiler 1.2.1
The XL C Compiler 1.2.1 is an optionally installed
part of AIX/6000 Version 3.2.3.
It produces optimized object code which exploits the
RISC System/6000 hardware and is upwardly compatible (ie. both source
and object) with XL C Compiler 1.2. It conforms to the following
industry standards :
- FIPS PUB 160 (certified)
- ANSI C X3.159-1989,
- ISO/IEC 9899:1990(E), and
- SAA C level 2 (with exceptions documented in the AIX XL Compiler/6000
Language Reference (SC09-1260)).
Functional Highlights for XL C Compiler 1.2.1 include:
- Enhanced optimizer
- Improved elimination of redundant storage accesses including
recurrences from loops
- Improved optimization of code that utilizes pointers
(deletion)
- Support for coexistence of -c and -o options that enable users to
specify name and location of the object file.
- New data alignment options
to support 1 or 2 byte aligned data structures.
- Option for small enum support
(enum variables will map to 1, 2, or 4 byte types, depending on their
range).
- Support C++ (ie. //) Style comments.
- Improved handling of the built-in functions
div, ldiv, imul_dbl, umul_dbl, bcopy, bzero, copysign, memcpy,
strncat, strncmp, and strncpy.
- Compile option to generate compact object code. This
enables users to tell the compiler to optimize for compactness of the
object code rather than speed of the executable.
- Compile option to limit the amount of memory used by space intensive
optimizations.
- Compile option to initialize automatic storage.
- Compile option equivalence of "#pragma isolated_call".
- Suppresses symbol table information for unreferenced variables
by default.
- New floating point arithmetic suboptions.
- Enhanced detection of floating-point exceptions.
- dbx Debugger Enhancements
- Support for expanded industry extension and selected FORTRAN 90
features introduced in AIX XL FORTRAN Compiler/6000 Version 2.3
(refer to Programming Announcement ZP92-0669 dated
October 20, 1992).

- Support the threaded environment of Distributed Computing
Environment (DCE). These modifications will help enhance the
productivity of programmers developing applications using DCE threads.
AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000
also includes support for the following separately orderable feature.
The planned
availability date is April 1993.
- Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON) 3088 Emulation Support
ESCON channel connection support is a separately chargeable
feature that allows the RISC System/6000 to
communicate to a System/390 (S/390) (TM) host with the aid of
ESCON adapters (see Product Annoucement ZG92-0341 dated
October 20, 1992).
This feature enables a RISC System/6000 to emulate a 3088 control
unit. The following are the types of
protocols that can be used to communicate between the RISC System/6000
and the S/390:
- Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Support.
This allows a TCP/IP connection between
the RISC System/6000 and the S/390. The connection allows
the RISC System/6000 to be used as a gateway between LAN based
workstations and the VM or MVS host. This protocol support requires
IBM VM TCP/IP Version 2.2, with appropriate update; or IBM MVS
TCP/IP Version 2.2.1.
- Normal mode 3088 programming support for both VM and MVS.
The interface is similar
to Channel-To-Channel (CTC) for user-written applications. This
protocol can facilitate the downsizing of host applications to
the desktop in a distributed environment. A device driver
programming interface is provided to ease the programming effort.
- Common Link Access Workstation (CLAW) programming support
for VM and MVS.
This new programming interface improves the S/390 processor
performance by reducing the number of I/O interrupts handled by
the host CPU. A device driver level API is provided.
Contact the branch office to order the ESCON 3088 Emulation support
feature.
The planned availability date is April 1993.

- Real Memory Paging Space Requirements
- Every system should have an amount of paging space equal to or
greater than the amount of real memory. The install procedure
allocates paging space based on both the amount of real memory
and the amount of disk space in the system. If the amount of
paging space is less than the amount of real memory in the system,
the system may run out of paging space before running out of
memory because the system allocates paging space first. Therefore,
when a page is referenced, both a real memory page and a paging
space block are allocated. If there are fewer paging space blocks
than real memory pages, paging space could be exhausted before
even all the memory is used. If an installed system has insufficient
paging space (because either the amount of paging space is less
than the real memory size or is less than the amount required for
the applications running on the system), additional paging space
should be allocated.
- Infoexplorer Hypertext Information Base Library
The InfoExplorer Hypertext Information Base Library
consists of a number of databases, which are shipped
in subsets with various licensed programs. Because
of hypertext links back and forth among the databases,
if you install any of the licensed program products
listed below with its InfoExplorer Hypertext database

- Limited Serviceability
- RISC System/6000's without a diskette drive
need special planning to allow themselves to
be configured when the source of fixes provided for are diskettes.
Selective fixes that are small in size will be distributed on diskettes.
If the RISC System/6000 does not have a 3.5-inch diskette drive,
it is the responsibility
of the customer to provide for a methodology of
transferring the fix images from
diskette to the system. Such a means may involve remote mounting over
a network or may involve copying to tape and
using the copied tape as source.
For large software service updates, the customer may (at IBM's discretion)
receive the updates via tape or other supported service media.
