    Title

    IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 220

    Abstract

The IBM RISC System/6000(TM) POWERstation/POWERserver 220 is designed to be an entry desktop workstation or server and is binary compatible with the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver family of systems. The POWERstation/POWERserver 220 features a POWER* Single Chip processor. Configurations without a disk or with 160 MB Disk Drives are available for LAN-dependent environments.

The POWERstation/POWERserver 220 has integrated SCSI and Ethernet controllers. It has extensive growth capability with up to 64 MB of error checking and correction (ECC) memory, internal fixed disk of up to 400 MB, up to a maximum of seven SCSI devices (including an optional internal fixed disk drive) on the SCSI bus, an optional 2.88 MB diskette drive, a POWER Gt1 graphics adapter slot, and two 32-bit Micro Channel(TM) card slots for optional features.

The models 22W and 22G are designed to meet customer needs for low-priced, special-purpose, "preconfigured" models without limiting customers' ability to add to the configuration to satisfy their unique requirements.

The POWER Gt1, an entry mono (1-bit per pixel) graphics adapter is also announced. This adapter supports both 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768 displays. VRAM options allow the POWER Gt1 to be configured as 4-bit or 8-bit frame buffers (for grayscale and colour).

IBM intends to seek VCCI-2 certification for the
             POWERstation/POWERserver 200 Series

    Machine Requirements

The requirements for operating the POWERstation/POWERserver 200 series are:

    • RISC System/6000-supported ASCII terminal or a POWERstation/POWERserver 200 series-supported display, display adapter, and keyboard.
    • For installation and support of diskless or dataless POWERstation/POWERserver 200 series systems, the network to which the POWERstation/POWERserver 200 series is attached must contain at least one IBM RISC System/6000 system that has a 3.5-inch diskette drive. In addition, that IBM RISC System/6000 must have AIX/6000 3.2, at the current level, installed and operational.
    • For standalone configurations, a disk drive and diskette drive are required. Diagnostics are run off the host if the POWERstation/POWERserver 200 series is attached to a network as a client; diagnostics must be run from a diskette or disk drive for standalone systems.

An external media unit is recommended to support software distribution in standalone environments.

    Programming Requirements

AIX/6000 3.2, at the level, including any updates, that is current at the time the POWERstation/POWERstation 200 series is available, is required for operating the POWERstation/POWERserver 200 series.

Small disk configurations above 120MB may be dependant on a LAN connection, based on the fixed-disk storage requirements of the specific software selected. Refer to 'Software Offerings' in the publication, IBM RISC System/6000 System Overview, (GC23-2406) for assistance on planning fixed-disk storage requirements.

    Planning Information

    Cable Orders

No additional cables required with the base machine.

    NOTE:

Customers wishing to attach existing external SCSI devices will need to order the Integrated SCSI External device cable (Feature code 2833) as the SCSI connector is different from that on existing RISC System/6000 models.

    Security, Auditability and Control

Security and auditability features of the POWERstation/POWERserver 200 series are:

    • Diskless configurations available for LAN-dependent environments to protect access to data and programs.

    • Physical security is provided by a key lock that helps prevent both cover removal and unauthorized IPL of operating system when locked.

    • Customer-orderable Security Cable accessory.
This product also uses the security and auditability features of host hardware, software and/or application software.

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
