Components and Configuration

Following is a description of the components and configuration possibilities for 7248 RS/6000 43P Series

Required Components: The initial order must contain the following selected from the available options. Based on the operating system selected, there may be certain recommendations and restrictions. Refer to the Operating Environment section for more detail.

  • Memory
  • Keyboard
  • Disk Drive
  • Country Pack (line cord)
  • Language Pack (Publications)

Orders may not contain more components then will fit into five slots and five bays. The five slots are 3 ISA, 2PCI or ISA (Shared).

Memory:

  • 4MB (70 ns) parity memory SIMM
  • 8MB (70 ns) parity memory SIMM
  • 16MB (70 ns) parity memory SIMM
  • 32MB (70 ns) parity memory SIMM

7248 RS/6000 43P Series can have memory configured up to 192 MB maximum with a minimum requirement of 16MB (parity). There are six memory SIMM connectors on the system board and memory SIMMs are required to be installed in pairs (there must be a minimum of 16 MB; two 8 MB memory SIMMs).

Six memory SIMM connectors provide for an economical memory buildup for most users. If future expansion of memory is projected, the purchaser must balance cost/availability of memory SIMMs with potential/total system memory requirements (Example: Today, installing four 8 MB memory SIMMs might be less expensive than one 32 MB memory SIMM but there would only be two connectors remaining for future memory expansion, for a 96 MB maximum instead of 192 MB maximum, without replacing/discarding 8 MB memory SIMMs).

Graphics Adapters

The 7248 RS/6000 43P Series uses PCI-based graphics adapters and offers high performance for graphics intensive applications. The adapter choices depend upon the price/performance the user requires. IBM E15-type graphics is standard on the 7248 RS/6000 43P Series motherboard. The adapters are:

The POWER GXT150P Graphics Adapter

The POWER GXT150P Graphics Adapter is an 8-bit, 256 color adapter that attaches the PCI local bus interface. The POWER GXT150P is designed for 2D applications including: desktop publishing, X-window applications, 2D mechanical drafting, CASE, chemical and biological applications, and electrical CAD. When used with the AIX Softgraphics software, the POWER GXT150P provides a cost-effective 3D platform.

Supported Options

There are no supported options defined for this adapter.

Hardware Description

The IBM E15-type graphics consists of the S3 Vision864 GUI accelerator chip, the S3 135 MHz 16-bit SDAC, 2 MB of DRAM frame buffer memory, a 14.31818 MHz crystal, and other miscellaneous components.

The GUI accelerator chip provides the following functions:

  • Host (PCI) bus access of DRAM, GUI accelerator and CRT controller registers, and the RAMDAC
  • Linear frame buffer addressing
  • 64-bit frame buffer interface and internal data flow
  • DRAM memory refresh and access control
  • 16-bit pixel stream for screen refresh to the RAMDAC, via a 16-deep 8-byte-wide FIFO
  • CRT controller (CRTC) functions
  • GUI drawing functions, including BitBLTs and rectangle fills
  • VGA compatibility
  • Hardware cursor support

The RAMDAC performs the following functions:

  • 16-bit pixel port throughput at up to 135 MHz 8-bit pixel rate
  • Pixel color translation through triple 256 x 6 color lookup tables (CLUTs)
  • 18 or 24-bit digital to analog RGB conversion through triple 8-bit DACs
  • CLUT bypass for 24-bit color modes
  • Dual integrated phase-locked loops (PLLs) provide MCLK and DCLK to the GUI accelerator chip

Display Modes and Resolutions

The following resolutions and color depths can be supported by the IBM E15 Graphics:

Limitations

  • A CD-ROM is required either in the system unit or easily accessible on the network to use the supplied backup media. The 43P does not support boot from tape.

  • The 43P does not support reset of certain hardware functions during an operating system-initiated software reboot (called "warm" or "soft" boot). Power-off resets all hardware functions. System hang or crash conditions may be experienced during some boot (IPL) instances that are initiated by the operating system.

In AIX a soft-boot can be initiated in the following ways:

    1. System administrator via the "shutdown" or "reboot" command.
    2. After a system crash if the "autoreboot" attribute is set.

Most reliable shutdown procedure requires power-off of the system unit.

  • The 7248 RS/6000 43P Series has 6 memory slots. The minimum memory configuration is 16 MB and the maximum memory configuration is 192 MB using 4 MB, 8 MB, 16 MB, or 32 MB memory SIMMs installed in pairs.

  • The 3 ISA slots can accommodate 2 full and one short ISA cards.

  • The 7248 RS/6000 43P Series supports 2 PCI or 2 additional ISA slots (one long and one short).

  • A maximum of one POWER GXT1000 Graphics Accelerator is supported.

  • Maximum data transfer rate of the CD-ROM is 1200KB/sec.

  • Maximum of 6 SCSI-2 devices can be attached (both internal and external) for the integrated SCSI controller.

  • Keyboards are PS/2-style keyboards.

  • Software Security Limitations:
    • Security modes may be set in software under password control. A mechanical keylock is provided to secure the cover only.
    • The External SCSI port can be disabled mechanically for security.

Ports:

  • Serial ports use the compact 9-pin format in place of the 25-pin format.

Diagnostics:

  • On Screen Diagnostics provide less cryptic messages than LEDs.
  • No LEDs for failure information or error code readout.
  • Diagnostics diskettes are provided with the system unit. Diagnostics cannot be run from the disk drive or while the normal operating system is running.

Data Protection and Reliability:

  • The 7248-100/120/132 is designed with lower cost parity memory. Parity memory provides data protection to ensure integrity of data. Soft errors in the system memory will be detected and halt the execution of the system so that errors are not propagated through the system. The system will have to be manually restarted to recover from the machine check. In user environments where this is not appropriate, RS/6000 machines with ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory should be chosen. ECC memory will detect single bit parity errors and correct them without interruption of the application or operating system.

  • A UPS or surge protector can increase data reliability in the event of a power outage. The Emergency Power Off Warning signal (EPOW), which alerts the operating system to power failures is not provided.

SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI-Bus Adapter (FC 2408, 6208, 2409, and 6209) Cabling Restrictions:

  • External cables and terminators supported:
    • 16 bit 1st dev cable for 2-port encl. - PN 06H6036 (Length: 1.0m)
    • 8 bit 1st dev cable for 2-port encl. - PN 06H6037 (Length: 1.0m)
    • 8 bit 1st dev cable for 1-port encl. - PN 52G0174 (Length: 1.5m)
    • 16 bit dev-dev cable for 2-port encl. - PN 52G9921 (Length: 0.5m)
    • 8 bit dev-dev cable for 2-port encl. - PN 33F4607 (Length: 0.7m)
    • 8 bit dev-dev cable for 1-port encl. - PN 31F4222 (Length: 0.7m)
    • 16 bit external active terminator (Boulay/Alt 2) - PN 52G9907
    • 8 bit external active terminator (FPT 18) - PN 51G7736 or 52G4260

There are no internal cables for the 43P.

  • When connecting external devices, a maximum of four independent physical enclosures are allowed, provided each physical enclosure presents one device load to the SCSI bus. For example, a combination of up to four enclosures such as bridge boxes can be attached, but an enclosure that contains multiple device loads (such as the IBM 7131 Multi-Storage Tower) CANNOT be attached in combination with any other external or internal load.

  • The restriction on external attachment is independent of the presence or absence of internally attached devices, with the supported internal cables listed above ONLY. This includes the attachment of external bridge boxes to an adapter with an Autobahn backplane attached to its internal connector.

  • The restriction on external attachment is independent of the use of dual-port SCSI connectors or piggyback connectors on the enclosure.

  • Mixed width devices on the external port are not supported due to cabling and termination restrictions.

  • A single enclosure containing any amount of multiple device loads attached to the external port is supported subject to these restrictions:
    • Maximum combined internal and external cable length is 3 meters;
    • Loads on the external cable must be separated by 6 inches;
    • No mixed device widths unless the IBM specified 16 to 8 bit interposer (or equivalent) is used.
    • Architectural restrictions of SCSI-2 must be observed (for example, 15 IDs total and all timing and skew restrictions).
    • No internal devices allowed on the same adapter.
    • The IBM 7131 Multi-Storage Tower is supported with no internal devices attached to the internal connector of the same adapter.

  • External terminators must use active termination technology on all active signals (18 pins for narrow buses or 27 pins for wide buses).

  • Only one multi-initiator configuration is allowed on the SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI-Bus Adapter (FC 2408 or 6208).

Feature Descriptions

The following is a list of feature codes in numeric order.

Attributes, as defined in the following feature descriptions, state the interaction of requirements among features.

Minimums and maximums are the absolute limits for a single feature without regard to interaction with other features. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different than for initial orders. The maximums listed below refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities.

The order type defines if a feature is orderable only on initial orders, only on MES orders, or is available for both initial and MES orders.

Specify feature 0001 must be used when ordering After Market (MES) orders in EMEA. All features with the exception of 3096, 3097, and 9396 are applicable.

(#8136) - Rack Mountable Remote Asynchronous Node 16-Port EIA-232

The Rack Mountable Remote Asynchronous Node 16-Port EIA-232 (RAN) is a modified version of the existing 16-port Remote Async Node (feature #8130 or #8134) in an industry-standard 19-inch rack mount chassis to allow simpler installation and ease-of-use. Like the existing RAN, it can also be configured as a desktop device.

As an additional benefit, the new metal chassis meets FCC Class B/CISPR B when used with similarly rated RS/6000 host to meet the needs of customers with these requirements.

The RANs provide 16 ports of EIA-232 capability with full modem controls on each port and are connected to the 128-port Async Controller (Micro Channel or ISA versions) residing in the host. RANs are connected in daisy-chain fashion up to 8 RANs per 128-port Async Controller (either version).

The new rack-mountable RAN offers these enhanced features:

  • Industry-standard 19-inch rack mountable chassis (can be configured for stacking on a desktop or mounted in a 19-inch rack).
  • Meets FCC Class B/CISPR B when used with similarly rated RS/6000 host.
  • All RJ-45 connectors are now on the front panel, greatly enhancing cable management.
  • The DB-15 synchronous connectors (cabling from host to RAN and between RANs) and the power cord and switch are located on the rear panel.
  • Power supply is self contained within the unit.

The new rack-mountable RAN offers these same features as the existing RAN product:

  • Identical function and support as existing 16-port Remote Async Node (RAN), feature #8130 or #8134.
  • Operation of 16 to 128 ports by supporting up to 8 RANs (4 per synchronous line) with either a Micro Channel or ISA host adapter.
  • Ability to monitor individual port operation, synchronous line station, and other diagnostics from front panel.
  • Built-in diagnostics can test ports independent of RS/6000 host.
  • Full modem control supports the following interface signals: TxD, RxD, RTS, CTS, DSR, DCD, DTR, RI.
  • The same RJ-45 to DB-25 Converter Cable (feature #8133 -- quantity four per order) currently used on the existing RANs can be used to attach devices having a DB-25 connector to the Remote Async Nodes.
  • Individual ports support a maximum EIA-232 distance of 62 meters (200 feet).
  • Use of the same cabling from host to RAN and RAN to RAN: feature #8131 (4.5 meter), feature #8132 (23 cm) or customer supplied cables.
