NCDware
=======
NCDware is Network Computing Devices's optimized X Server software. It
offers a wide range of powerful features that increase performance,
simplify administration, and maximize the utility of NCD's X terminals.
This software can boot an NCD X terminal either over the network or
from local storage. XRemote is an NCDware option that allows NCD X
terminals to communicate efficiently over serial lines.

New features in NCDware 3.2 include local tn3270 terminal emulation,
local Display PostScript, Energy Star support, local OSF/Motif, NFS
file service, local XTrap, Quick Start PCMCIA memory cards as well as
significant enhancements to existing features like adding PPP
(Point-to-Point Protocol) communication to XRemote. Please, see also
the "NCDware 3.2 Release Notes."

Memory Requirements
===================
The following table lists the server configurations along the left
column and the supported terminal models along the top. Each table
entry indicates the minimal memory requirements in mega bytes (MB) for
a terminal model running a server configuration. An entry with a
breakdown i.e. "6 MB (2/4)" indicates terminal models which address
code (2 MB) and data (4 MB) memory separately. An entry of "NA"
indicates that the server configuration is not available for that
model.

(1) XRemote for the ECX is available for PCMCIA Memory Cards. PROMs are not
    available.
(2) For applications more advanced than PostScript file viewing, recommend
    increasing data RAM to 8 MB.
(3) Recommend 8MB or more data memory for most "display list mode" PEX
    applications.
(4) The 14c, 17c and 19 are discontinued hardware products.
(5) All supported NCD platforms are available with XRemote except the NCD19,
    which can run XRemote 2.4.8.

NCDware Boot Media
==================
NCDware can be broken into two sets of components: those that run on a
host system and those that run on the NCD X terminal. For example,
installation of NCDware Boot Media (CD or tape) is supported on the
host system while the X server itself runs on the NCD X terminal.
NCDware includes binaries for supportive applications such as the Font
Server, XDM login service, and XRemote host side support. These
supportive applications run on the host system and enhance (or enable
in the case of XRemote) the operation of the NCD X terminal. Even when
using local boot media, it is wise (or required in the case of XRemote)
to also install a copy of the NCDware media.

The latest release of NCDware supports installation and configuration
on the following host operating systems:

	 o SunOS	 		o DEC ULTRIX
	 o Hewlett-Packard HP-UX	o DEC VMS
	 o IBM AIX

Additional host system installations and NCDware supportive
applications are provided on the Contribution CD which is included
with every copy of the NCDware Boot Media.

Local Boot Media
================
PROMs and PCMCIA Memory Cards are media options which store NCDware X
Server software "locally." In addition, PCMCIA card-based units allow
you to store updated revisions of NCDware which can be downloaded into
the PCMCIA card across the network.

It is advisable to purchase an NCDware Boot Media with those NCD X
terminals that will be booting from PROM or PCMCIA Memory Cards, as it
provides fonts, XRemote host binaries, and compressed X Servers that
can be downloaded into the PCMCIA Memory Cards.

PCMCIA Memory Cards
-------------------
NCD is offering preconfigured PCMCIA Memory Cards in two sizes: 2MB and
4MB Quick Start. The major benefit of a PCMCIA Memory Card vs. PROMs
is that it is "update ready". New revisions of NCDware can be
downloaded across the network as compressed boot images into the PCMCIA
Memory card. These compressed boot images are also included on the
NCDware Boot Media.

Quick Start PCMCIA Memory Cards
-------------------------------
Quick Start PCMCIA Memory Cards (4MB) have either a Minimal X Server or
an XRemote Only Server preconfigured into the card at the factory along
with fonts and configuration files. This allows users to boot the unit,
login, and operate in their native environment locally or remotely
(Sun, HP, IBM, and DEC Ultrix) within minutes.

Local Boot Media Options
========================
The following table lists the local boot media options with preloaded
server configurations along the left two columns and the supported
terminal models along the top. An entry of "X" indicates that the local
media option with the corresponding preloaded server is available for
the terminal models. An entry of "NA" indicates that the local media
option is not available for the terminal models.

    PCMCIA.
(3) The Quick Start PCMCIA cards (4MB) require 2.6.0 Boot PROMs.

    work with PROMs. PROM options for the 19 continue to be available for
    previous releases of NCDware and XRemote.
