How to connect an NCD 3.0.x system via SLIP
------------------------------

To configure your display for SLIP follow the steps below:

1. Configure the serial port via the serial menu under the setup parameter
	Use Port For	terminal
	Baud Rate	xxxx Baud
	Data Bits 8
	Stop Bits	1
	Parity None
	Handshake	DTR/DTS or RTS/CTS <match the modem or port>

2. In the Serial menu ( in the Setup Parameters), ensure "terminal" is used in the "Use Port For" field

3. From the New Serial window (in the Terminals menu), log into SLIP host.

4. Go into SLIP mode. This could be done with "slattach" or a SLIP command for gateways, unless this is a direct connect rs232 line from a IBM rs6000 or if the rs232 port does not have a getty process and require a ifconfig command to start SLIP on the rs232 line ( i.e. IBM RS6000).

5. In the Serial menu ( in the Setup Parameters), change Use Port For to SLIP using replace and then an apply.

6. In the IP menu ( in the Setup Parameters), ensure the System's IP Address is set correctly

7. In the IP menu ( in the Setup Parameters), set the gateway internet address to the address of your SLIP interface IP address.

8. Toggle interface selection in the IP menu ( in the Setup Parameters) between Ethernet and Serial with an apply after each change.

9. Verify the connection by pinging the SLIP host via Test Network from the Utilities menu. If the ping fails perform steps 5-8 again.

10. Now use the New Telnet window (in the Terminals menu) to login and start X clients on the host machine.

	login
	setenv DISPLAY ncdname:0
	xterm&
	xclock&

11. Also Use the NCD local Window Manager to help increase user performance and cut down the amount of X traffic being sent over the SLIP line.

IBM RS6000 information on SLIP:

It is very important to ensure the rs232 line being used for the slip connection is setup via SMIT with the field "Enable LOGIN" set to disabled. Then make the rs232 connection to the NCD with the NCD pre setup for SLIP. Once this ahas been done the once again use SMIT and the Network interface (i.e. sl0) to up.

If the network interface is enabled before the rs232 connection is made and the NCD is not ready for a SLIP connection, you will recevice network errors on the SLIP line and the connection will not establish correctly.
