NCD NCD SYSTEMS CORPORATION Technical Note WinCenter Pro Installation Notes Installation Preparation Before you install WinCenter Pro, read Chapter One of the Citrix WinFrame Quick installation Guide, for system configuration, system requirements and performance considerations. Familiarize yourself with Microsoft Windows NT networking concepts including domains, primary domain controller, backup domain controller, and servers on a domain. Learn the basics of user administration, security and groups. A good resource on these concepts is Microsofts Resource Kit for Windows NT. Check you hardware configuration against Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) for Windows NT. There is an HCL included in the WinCenter Pro documentation. For the most up to date list, you can download it from Microsoft's Web site at http://www.microsoft.com. If your hardware manufacture requires specific drivers for the Hardware Abstraction Layer or HAL, these drivers are usually included with the hardware package on a system configuration disk. Look in your hardware manual for specific instructions for installing Windows NT. The most common drivers not included on the installation disks are proprietary SCSI cards or chip sets on the mother board, Network Interface Cards (NICs) and non standard storage devices such as CD-ROM drives. NCD strongly recommends that you check your hardware manufactures home page for any updates to hardware drivers, the system BIOS and patches for the system that are specific to Windows NT 3.51. The WinCenter Pro Applications server package has the basic level of operating system and network functionality of Windows NT Workstation. Use this package if you have an existing NT network, and do not need to establish shares or print from the WinCenter Pro server. As part of a NT network or domain, the WinCenter Pro users can share resources (printers, etc.) existing on the domain. User administration can and should be maintained on the domains primary domain controller. The WinCenter Pro Network server packages has the functionality of Windows NT Server. The package includes support for: * PC print and file service, * Primary and backup domain controller, * Disk mirroring and RAID, and * Remote access (RAS) Use this package if this is the first NT server on your network and/or you need the functionality of one of the services listed above. All services and administration will need to be configured on the WinCenter Pro server. Design, integration and testing of your WinCenter Pro system with your existing network is an important key to maximizing performance and minimizing system administration headaches. Take time to plan the integration of the WinCenter Pro system into your network. As with all new installations on a network, schedule time for pre-production testing of the WinCenter Pro server to work out configuration and performance issues. While testing the installation, let users who are connecting to the system know that they are on an experimental system and that they should expect some down time. Disk Inventory You should have the following disk for installation of WinCenter Pro: * 3 Citrix WinFrame Server/Boot Setup disks * 1 Citrix WinFrame CD-ROM * 1 Citrix WinFrame 15 Base License Disk * 1 Citrix WinFrmae Server License Disk (not included with the WinCenter Pro Applications Server package) * 1 Citrix WinFrame Client for Netware * 1 Citrix WinFrame TCP/IP Services * 1 Citrix WinFrame Client for Windows for Workgroups * 1 NCD WinCenter Connect CD-ROM * 1 FTP Interdrive NFS Installation WinCenter Pro Installation is almost identical to Windows NT setup, and any references to Windows NT in this guide and in the setup process also apply to WinCenter Pro. Standard WinCenter Pro Installation To Install WinCenter Pro 1. Have the WinFrame Server Boot/Setup diskettes and the WinFrame CD-Rom available. 2. With your computer turned off, insert the WinFrame Boot Diskette in drive A. Power on the system. Your system will boot of the setup disk. The installation welcome screen will appear with options for the type of WinFrame installation to install. Choose new installation by pressing the ENTER key. 4. In the server setup screen choose custom setup by pressing C 5. Setup needs to know the type of disk controller on the system. You can have setup either detect the driver automatically, you can make a selection from a list of predefined drivers or you can choose other which allows you to add a driver not listed by setup. If your hardware manufacture requires special drivers then choose S, then Other from the list of drivers. Otherwise choose ENTER and have NT detect the controller for you. Insert Disk #3 when prompted. 6. If you have an existing NT or WinCenter Pro installation you will be asked to upgrade NT or do a completely new install. * Do not install WinCenter on top of a previous copy of Windows NT. Choose new installation. If you do not wish to destroy the previously installed NT, you can choose an alternate directory for WinCenter Pro. 7. The hardware and software component screen has a list of defaults for your machine. Accept the defaults and press ENTER to continue. 8. Create a new partition if you are installing NT for the first time. If there is an existing NTFS partition then just choose to install NT on the existing partition. Always install WinCenter on an NTFS partition. 9. Setup can do an exhaustive scan of your hard disk(s). Press ENTER to let NT do the scan, Press ESC to continue. 10. NT will now reboot. Remove the floppy in driver A, and press ENTER to restart your computer and continue with the setup process. 11. When NT starts up, you will be prompted for information (i.e., name, company name., etc.). When asked, be sure to give your computer an unique name on your network. 12. You are given a choice of optional task to perform. Choose the first two options, and choose the last two if they reflect your situation. If you have printers on the network, do not chose Set Up Printers. That option is only for printers physically connected to the server. 13. You are given a choice of optional components to install. Accept the defaults and click the CONTINUE button. 14. Setup will now try to detect you network card. Click CONTINUE button. 15. Setup will display the card it detected. Choose continue and setup will begin copying disk to your system. If setup did not detect a network card, a message will be displayed saying so. Hit the CONTINUE button twice. Setup displays a list of network card drivers. If yours is listed choose the card and hit install. If yours is not listed, choose OTHER insert into driver A the floppy disk from your network card manufacture with the NT network drivers. 16. Setup will now ask for the network protocols you would like to install. If you are on a TCP/IP only network then choose TCP/IP Transport and disable Nwlink IPS/SPX and NetBEUI transports. Otherwise, choose the appropriate transport(s) that reflect your situation. If possible, do not choose NetBEUI Transport unless absolutely necessary. NetBEUI is a "chatty" protocol and can slow down network response times. 17. If necessary setup will ask for the components of your chosen network transport you would like to install. Choose the appropriate components for your network. 18. Setup will then ask for options for configuring the components you chose in the previous step. Choose the options that reflect your network. 19. Setup displays the network components that have been chosen and install. If you have more selections to add, do so by choosing Add Software, or Add Adapter. If you are satisfied with the current selections choose the OK button. * Note: Do not install the Interdrive NFS component at this time. 20. If you have chosen TCP/IP Transport, setup will prompt you for the internet address and other IP information. 21. If you purchased the Server Option Pack, you have the option of defining the server as a domain controller. Otherwise select the server role. 22. Give the server a password for the Administrator user account.. 23. Setup will display the Virtual Memory settings. At this time accept the defaults and click on the CONTINUE button. 24.
