Procedure to tape boot an SP node
This document describes how to tape boot an SP node and restore with sysback. It
applies to AIX Version 4.2.1.
- Power down the node.
Use the GUI (spmon -g) or issue the command
spmon -p off node1.
- Open a tty.
Using the spmon GUI, select:
- Display Layouts
- Display Node Layout
- Node Front Panel
- Open a TTY
Alternatively, issue the command spmon -open node1.
- If this is not a silver node, put the key in Service Mode.
Use the spmon GUI or issue the command spmon -key service node1.
- If this is a high node, press Enter to get the ">" prompt.
- Enter sbb and press Enter.
- Choose option 1, Set Flags.
- Verify that Autoservice IPL is set to Disable and
that Fast IPL is set to Enable.
- Enter x repeatedly to exit to the ">" prompt.
- Enter Ctrl-x to break the tty connection.
- Power on the node with Node Controls.
Use the spmon GUI or issue the command spmon -p on node1.
Press Enter. If you see the following prompt, enter n:
DO YOU WANT TO UPDATE FLASH FROM LINE S2 [y/n] ?
- If this is a silver node, use SMS to install from tape.
- Wait for the system logo.
- Press 1 at one second intervals until entering SMS appears.
- The following menu will display:

- Select option 2, Multiboot.
After a Please Wait message, the following will display:

- Select option 3, Install From.
A menu similar to the following will display:

- Select the network interface by typing its number and
press Enter.
- After some time, the system should prompt you for your console.
- Sysback should come up shortly after restoring programs from tape. When it does,
follow these steps:
- Change Volume Group & Logical Volume Info
- Verify information
- Install the System with Current Settings
