Start the program

In case you cannot use a version already installed try to download the code from the ATIMA web-page.
To compile it you need the CC, javac, and GNU F77 or GFORTRAN compilers.

At GSI you can start it at
    /u/weick/Atima/JavaAtima
The program will automatically create a folder ATIMA with subdirectories.

The main window

The main window will appear.

as well as a small window for editing the target list.

Changing the projectile

Click on [new projectile] in the main window and enter the new projectile nucleus, i.e. 136Xe. The exact masses are taken from a mass table. Projectiles are assumed to be fully stripped.

Click on [initial beam parameters] in the main window. Three values are required:

Editing the target list

Press [Edit] to get into the edit mode.

Here you can change the order by marking one or two targets and pressing the [Move], [Swap], [Del], [Copy] buttons.
[Deact.] deactivated a target entry. A "D" will appear in front of the target material and it will not be considered in the calculation.
New materials can be entered in the "Add targets window", press [Add].

To add a new target mark one material in the list on the left hand side. It contains all elements plus a number of composite materials. Then enter the thickness in mg/cm2 and press [Return]. A new entry will appear on the right hand side in the "New target list". You can repeat this many times. You can also choose a complete arrangement of materials like for a complete detector, just click on the entry in the "Equipment" list.
Afterwards you may [Replace] the old target list with this new one, [Append] it to the old one, or [Insert] the new list into the old one starting at a certain position. The new entries will appear in the target list window and you can press [Quit] to close the "Add targets" window. Finally, you may also leave the edit mode by pressing once more [Edit].
In this mode you can still change the thickness of single targets. Just click on one target in the list and a request window will open.

Modes of calculations

There are different ways how to calculate. Select the mode with the radio buttons to toggle between the modes.

Choose between

Finally, press [Calculate] in the main window.

The output window

After calculation two windows will appear: the "output window" and the "parameter selection".

One can look at the values of the projectile ions in different targets by shifting the menu bar on the top. Many quantities are displayed before and behind each target layer. The energy and angular straggling refers to only one layer of  matter whereas the width is accumulated over all layers including the initial spread.
In the "output format" pull-down menu you may select different views of the table. For example to see all targets at once in mode targets vs. parameters.

As there are so many lines of output you may choose only a few by marking them in the parameter selection list and pressing [Update] afterwards.

To use the data for further work you can export the table to a file. This file will be created in the directory Atima/atima.output

Load and save data sets

In the main window you can find the pull-down menu "File".

Here you can load or save a target list or a configuration (target list with beam). The files will always be stored in the director Atima/atima.data .
To save the target list select "save target list and enter the file name. Same procedure for a configuration.

To load a target list set select "read target list", choose the list (i.e. "hallo"). The entries are displayed on the right hand side. You can [Replace] the existing list, [Append] it or [Insert] it staring at a certain position.

To load a configuration select "read configuration" and just click on the name in the list. The target list should change. Afterwards you can close the window with [Quit].
