VAXstation 4000/60 specific notes
Pixx
History
Not much to say yet about this box.
Obtained it from another collector's surplus.
Unfortunately the battery chip (Dallas) seems to be empty,
so the box doesn't remember its boot device across power cycles.
Apart from that it works perfectly and I may use it
as a reference machine between the
3100/M76
and the
4000/90
Battery
Unfortunately
the VS4000/60 is one of those machines with the god-awful DS1287 clock chip,
which is difficult to find and replace once it is empty.
In this case the machine will forget its time and also its boot device,
so it falls back to network boot (ESA0
).
One has to manually specify
set boot dka0 ! for SCSI disk 0
boot
! or:
boot dka0 ! for SCSI disk 0
CD-ROM
The following CD-ROM drives booted VMS successfully:
Plextor PX-32TSi
Toshiba XM-6201B
Toshiba XM-5301B
RAM
The 4000/60 comes with 8MB onboard RAM.
It has 6 additional slots to be populated with either 4MB or 16MB
RAM modules, to maximum of 104MB. The 4MB ones are the same as for the
VAXstation 3176.
Take care they sit correctly in their sockets: insert them
first with an angle of around 45 degrees and press them firmly
into their sockets until they're in upright position.
It has happened to me that a fully loaded system was reported
has having 104MB, but the RAM tested failed due to badly connected
RAM modules.
