WEDGE

WEDGE calculates the degrader slope necessary to make the imaging of the FRS achromatic or to form a monoenergetic beam. The input you need are the ion optical dispersions and magnifications as calculated for example with GICOSY. Next you have to specify the fragment ion, the degrader material and its mean thickness. WEDGE then calculates the energy loss and performs a fit to give you the wedge slope. There are standard optics which you may choose or you enter your own values. In a full MOCADI simulation you can check easily whether the achromatic or monochromatic condition is fulfilled.

How to use WEDGE at GSI

Wedge is currently available on the LINUX-system. To run it type:
    /u/weick/mocadi/exe/wedge

example

In reality you may often have not only one kind of matter in one focal plane. Then just select the material which contributes most and adjust its thickness until you get the same energy loss as with many layers.

The value of the degrader disk TS3ED7DS you have to enter in the SD control program you can get from the FRS online degrader calculator to calculate the step motor input for all degraders at S2 or S4.
