IBM RS/6000 40P specific notes
The 40P appeared in 1994 and appears to me as
a hybrid between the latest MCA machines
and
the first 43Ps.
It has a form factor similar to the
42T,
the same processor (PPC601) as the
25T,
but the interior looks more like the first
43Ps (Models 7248).
Just like the latter, it has no LED, which is a PITA because one
can't controÎ what's going at boot time.
Apart from its native OS, AIX, it should be able to run WindozeNT/PPC
as well.
I obtained the machine as a gift when another collector,
Sven Paulus, cleared his garage collection.
On boot it powered up only shortly, it died after a few seconds.
At first I thought the box was fatally ill, but when I looked at it more
closely a few weeks later, I discovered that one of the control wires between
power switch and mobo has been cut, probably when the boxes cover
was removed/reseated. After temporarily fixing the connection,
the machine worked again just fine.
It still had an OS (AIX 4.1.5) on it, but took extremely
long (several minutes) to boot, maybe because I did not
connect it to a network, and thus time-outs occured.
In order to fix some of these,
I hooked up a Toshiba XM-5301B CD-ROM drive with an AIX 4.1.5 CD
and
booted the box with F1
pressed.
It requested an SMS diskette, but eventually booted off the CD,
so I could apply the
usual magic.

People say either 8 or 32MB will fit, but are hard to find.

Loosen the three upper screws on the rear side.
