Thermalization, evolution and observables in integrated hydrokinetic model of A+A collisions

Abstract
A further development of the evolutionary picture of A+A collisions, which we call the integrated hydrokinetic model (iHKM), is proposed. The model comprises a generator of the initial state, prethermal dynamics of A+A collisions leading to thermalization, subsequent relativistic viscous hydrodynamic expansion of quark-gluon and hadron medium (vHLLE), its particlization, and finally the hadronic UrQMD cascade. We calculate for different centralities midrapidity charged-particle multiplicities, pion, kaon, and antiproton spectra, charged-particle elliptic flows, pion and kaon interferometry radii, source functions for different hadron pairs and use the latter to extract the scattering lengths for baryon-(anti)baryon pairs as well as predict (anti-)proton-hyperon correlation functions for Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. Also we analyze Phi and K* resonance production and their decays in hadronic medium.

Thermodynamically Anomalous Properties and Possible New Signals of Mixed Phase Formation in Central Nuclear Collisions

Abstract
I will present the recent results obtained within the most advanced version of the hadron resonance gas model. Using this model we have found indications for irregularities in data for hadrons produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These include an abrupt change of the effective number of degrees of freedom, a change of the slope of the ratio of lambda hyperons to protons at laboratory energies 8.6 - 11.6 A GeV, as well as a plateau in the collision-energy dependence of the thermal pion number per baryon at laboratory energies 6.9 - 11.6 A GeV. We also find hints for the existence of plateaus in the collision-energy dependence of the entropy per baryon and the total pion number per baryon, which are correlated to the one of the thermal pion number per baryon at the same collision-energy range. Also, we observe a sharp peak in the dimensionless trace anomaly at a laboratory energy of 11.6 A GeV. This naturally explains the change of slope in the energy dependence of the yield of lambda hyperons per proton at a laboratory energy of 8.6 A GeV. Also I will talk about the possible observation of a second phase transformation at higher energies of collision.

  Dynamics of strongly interacting parton-hadron matter

  Abstract
  We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of heavy-ion collisions from SIS to LHC energies within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which incorporates explicit partonic degrees of freedom in terms of strongly interacting quasiparticles (quarks and gluons) in line with an equation of state from lattice QCD as well as the dynamical hadronization and hadronic collision dynamics in the final reaction phase. The 'highlights' of the latest results on electromagnetic probes (photons and dileptons), charm quarks and 'bulk' collective observables (hadron spectra, collective flows v_n) from heavy-ion collisions will be presented. Furthermore, we discuss a recent extension of the PHSD to include essential aspects of chiral symmetry restoration (CSR) in the hadronic sector (via the Schwinger mechanism) on top of the deconfinement phase transition which provides a microscopic explanation for the maximum in the K+/pi+ ratio ('horn') at about 30 AGeV.

  The gift that keeps giving: surprises from ridges in p+p, p/d/He+A and A+A collisions

  Abstract
  We discuss the latest results on collimated long range rapidity correlations (the ridge) in hadron-hadron collisions and explore their interpretation in two distinct frameworks that display the collective features demanded by the experimental results. Sorting through these explanations and identifying the correct interpretation of data may offer novel insight into the structure of correlations and fluctuations of partons in hadrons, as well as broader questions regarding the decoherence and the applicability of a hydrodynamic description of the smallest systems in nature.

  Multiplicity dependence of charm production in pp scattering at 7 TeV and parton saturation

  Abstract
  Recent experimental studies of heavy quark (HQ) production in proton - proton collisions at 7 TeV showed an unexpected strong non-linear increase of the HQ multiplicity as a function of the event activity. We try to understand this behavior using the EPOS3 approach (a model to simulate pp, pA, and AA collisions at ultrarelativistic energies). After a short review of the model, in particular the multiple scattering aspect, we will discuss recent developments concerning the implementation of parton saturation. This has important consequences for all observables using multiplicity triggers, and we will investigate one of them in detail, namely the multiplicity dependence of charm production.

  Open heavy-flavours as probes of the Quark-Gluon Plasma: status and future perspectives

  Abstract
  The large interest in open heavy-flavour physics in heavy-ion collisions is proven by the many results obtained at both RHIC and LHC energies. Heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are produced in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions and their abundance is not expected to change throughout the evolution of the system. Hence, they behave as self-generated probes that traverse the hot and dense medium losing energy via subsequent elastic scatterings and/or gluon radiation. The combination of different detection techniques at the RHIC and LHC experiments makes them well suited to measure decays of particles containing heavy quarks in a wide momentum region and in different rapidity ranges. Recent results on heavy-flavour production in heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies will be discussed. The experimental observables that allow us to study the effects of the hot and dense medium created in heavy-ion collisions will be presented and compared at the different collision energies. In order to gain insight on the medium properties via heavy-flavour measurements, I will elaborate on the comparison with different theoretical models based on in-medium heavy-quark energy loss and will discuss the future perspectives from an experimental point of view.

  The ALICE Upgrade program

  Abstract
  The ALICE Collaboration has prepared an exciting scientific program to exploit the heavy-ion beam times at the LHC during runs 3 and 4, starting from 2021. New opportunities will be opened by higher heavy-ion interaction rates and therefore high data statistics. The attractive and challenging physics goals require a significant upgrade of the experimental setup, including the major detector components, the readout and trigger systems, and the overall computing model. The physics goals and the prospects with the data collected with the upgraded ALICE will be presented and discussed. Some aspects of the on-going detector construction and system developments will be illustrated.

  Progess towards the QCD phase diagram

  Abstract
  The QCD phase diagram plays an increasingly important role in heavy ion, nuclear and astrophysics. Because of the so-called sign problem of lattice QCD, it cannot be simulated by Monte Carlo methods, which have been so successful for the computation of the hadron spectrum or thermodynamics at zero density. For this reason cumbersome computational detours need to be taken, most introducing additional systematic errors. I review the slow but steady progress towards understanding the QCD phase diagram in growing regions of the generalised parameter space of temperature, baryon density and quark masses.
